‘Better Roads, Safe Streets’ Submits Over 32,000 Signatures to Advance Transportation Measure Toward November Ballot

April 14,2026 – Demonstrating broad, countywide support from community leaders, business, labor organizations, local elected officials, and residents across Fresno County, the “Better Roads, Safe Streets” campaign officially submitted over 32,000 signatures from Fresno County voters to the County Elections Office to qualify for the November ballot.

The submission marks a major milestone for the effort and underscores strong public support for improving local roads, enhancing safety, and strengthening Fresno County’s transportation infrastructure for future generations.

“I’m really excited to be a part of this historic movement and be here for this important moment to turn in the petitions needed to get our transportation improvement measure on the ballot,” said Marisol Herrera, a college student and youth leader with Youth Leadership Institute. “I am one of the many young adults who volunteered to collect signatures. Alongside me was my sister, my friends, and one of my peers who just turned 18 celebrated her birthday by collecting signatures! When I first got involved with this campaign in 2022, I was a junior in high school. What has kept me involved over the years is wanting to change my community for the better.”

“In less than a month and a half, our historic coalition collected over 32,000 signatures to qualify the Better Roads, Safe Streets measure for the November ballot,” said Veronica Garibay of the Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability. “It’s a testament to the power and trust built by and among young people, community leaders, community-based organizations, elected officials, labor and business leaders, and local government. I could not be more proud of our work to get here, and even more proud of the young people and community leaders leading the charge.”

Supporters – including community organizations, labor and business leaders, elected officials and volunteers – gathered in Downtown Fresno to deliver boxes of signed petitions to the Elections Office.

The “Better Roads, Safe Streets” transportation measure is not a new tax, but an updated plan to continue and improve the existing half-cent sales tax that has funded transportation improvements in Fresno County since 1986.  If approved, the measure is expected to raise $7.4 billion over 30 years.

Mayor of Fresno Jerry Dyer speaking to public during press event announcing the submission of over 32,000 signatures to advance Better Roads Safe Streets transportation measure toward November ballot

“I’m proud to support the Better Roads, Safe Streets measure,” said Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer.  “I really do believe it is a game changer for Fresno County. One hundred percent of the funds stay local under local control. Almost two thirds of every single dollar in this measure will go to fixing local roads, neighborhood streets, sidewalks, alleys and median islands. And it’s not just a City of Fresno measure. I want to stress that this is a measure for all of Fresno County. Every single jurisdiction, whether you’re incorporated or unincorporated, every single jurisdiction will benefit from this. And it also creates good paying jobs for the folks who live in Fresno County. And with that, we stimulate our local economy.”

The measure provides dedicated funding to repair and maintain local streets and roads;  Improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists; and modernize public transportation options to connect residents to jobs, schools, and essential services.

Key investments under the measure include:

  • Repairing our local streets and roads, prioritizing projects thousands of residents say matter most: repairing neighborhood roads and making streets safe.
  • Making it quicker, safer and easier to get from point A to point B, regardless of whether someone drives, takes the bus, bikes or walks.
  • Investing in making neighborhoods safer: newer intersections, better lighting, and improved traffic signals to reduce crashes and protect drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Directing resources where they’re needed most, starting with neighborhoods that have the worst roads, most potholes and fewest transportation options.
  • Strengthening our economy by creating good local jobs and keeping businesses moving through investments in neighborhood street repair and new transportation projects.
  • Providing a significant long-term investment in Fresno County’s transportation system without raising taxes.

Supporters emphasize that the measure is a countywide effort, ensuring that every city and unincorporated community benefits from long-term improvements.  The proposal reflects extensive public input and prioritizes projects that improve daily commutes, enhance safety, and strengthen the local economy.

City Councils in Clovis, Coalinga, Firebaugh, Huron, Mendota, Parlier, and San Joaquin already have passed resolutions in support of the measure, with more cities expected to follow in the coming weeks.
